Actors and actresses are invited to audition for a workshop production of “Weaving Penelope,” a new play by Rebecca Daniels and Richard Carp, and directed by Carmela Lanza-Weil, that will be performed June 26 in Shelburne Falls.

According to a press release from Daniels, “Weaving Penelope” is a play exploring the mostly untold story about the wife of Odysseus, who ruled her husband’s kingdom while he was away in the Trojan War — and on other adventures — for 20 years. It explores Penelope’s experiences and expands on scenes from Homer’s “The Odyssey.” The play nods to some Greek theater conventions, including the use of a chorus of players who narrate the story and out of which all characters — except Penelope — emerge.

The play involves a diverse ensemble of about 10 characters, the release states. Actors and actresses of all genders, ethnicities and ages (16 or over) are welcome to audition.

Those who are interested should submit a link (YouTube or Vimeo) to a self-taped monologue (60 to 90 seconds long), along with a resume and, if available, a headshot to Lanza-Weil at carmela.lanza.weil@gmail.com no later than April 2. According to the release, callbacks will be held in person on Saturday, April 9, and rehearsals will begin in mid-May, scheduled according to participants’ availability.

All actors and actresses must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, the release states. Those who audition are asked to provide a scan of their vaccine card or show proof of vaccination at the callbacks. A stipend is available for all participants.

With questions, contact Lanza-Weil at carmela.lanza.weil@gmail.com or Daniels at rdaniels2525@gmail.com.
