Hits weren’t going to be easy to come by at Vets Field in Greenfield on Thursday night with Greenfield’s MacKenzie Paulin and Franklin Tech’s Hannah Gilbert in the circle.

Gilbert was near perfect for the Eagles, giving up just two hits while striking out eight. Paulin was downright dominant however, allowing only one hit while striking out 19 for the Green Wave. Greenfield scored the game’s lone run in the fourth inning to squeak out a 1-0 independent victory.

The Green Wave’s run came after Anna Bucala singled to open the fourth. Ainslee Flynn put a pair of runners on following an error and Bucala scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Paulin, giving Greenfield the lone run of the game.

Ellis Benitez had the Green Wave’s other hit in the game. Lilly Ross smashed a single for Franklin Tech in the fourth.

“It was a great battle and everything we anticipated it being,” Eagles coach Joe Gamache said. “Hats off to both pitchers, they were both fantastic. If we meet again, there will be a lot more at stake. We have to stay focused to earn another opportunity to see them.”
