Eliminate Arms Academy from the list

We, neighbors of the historic Arms Academy, ask the Senior Center Expansion Committee to, at its next meeting, eliminate Arms Academy from its list of potential sites for a new senior center.

We oppose the site because it will dramatically change the feel of our neighborhood, alter views for neighbors of the hills and the building itself, increase traffic, create noise and traffic during construction, possibly reduce green space, and other reasons.

More than 130 neighbors and Arms Academy alumni have signed two petitions in opposition to building a senior center at the Arms. Most of the signers are senior citizens themselves.

The Shelburne Historical Society, which runs the museum in the Arms, voted unanimously Aug. 11 against siting the senior center at the Arms, which is on the National Register of Historic places. Many of us support the idea of an improved and possibly new senior center. Those of us who do will be glad to help in making it happen in any way we can. There are a lot of us, and we would like to put our energies into helping.

But we will fight any proposal to build the senior center at the Arms Academy. Too much time and money are being wasted on pursuing this site, which will be fought on Shelburne Town Meeting floor.

Please eliminate it from your list.
