Two rivals played another tight match at the Davis Street Courts on Thursday, as host Greenfield won two of the three singles matches en route to a 3-2 win over Turners Falls.

Amy Mihailicenco was a 6-4, 6-4 winner at No. 1 singles for the Green Wave, taking down Turners’ Avery Heathwaite.

Rebecca Covalenco also took a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 for Greenfield over Gia Marigliano, and the Wave No. 1 doubles team of Lydia Wood and Karinna Kostov snatched a 6-1, 6-0 win.

Turners’ Olivia Wolbach was a 6-3, 6-0 winner at No. 2 singles over Izzy Semonelli, and the Thunder also received a point at second doubles where Allysia Corbin and Fiona Hutchinson won 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.

Boys tennis

PVCICS 5, Turners 0 – The high-powered Dragons swept the Thunder in Tri-County League action on Thursday.

Noah Kolodziej played well in a second-singles defeat for Turners Falls.

Frontier 4, Chicopee Comp 1 – Robert Fuqua (6-0, 6-2) and Caiden Manning (6-4, 6-3) were winners at second and third singles, respectively, to propel the Redhawks.

Oliver Brown and Brayden Reipold notched a 6-1, 6-0 win at first doubles for Frontier while Donovan Vichi and Noah Nicols scored a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles.

Baseball

Athol 28, Mohawk Trail 18 – Riley Young was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and six RBIs to help power the Bears to their fourth straight victory in a wild game on Thursday in Athol.

“He sparked our offense,” Athol coach Josh Talbot said.

Enyert Arias Cepeda returned to the starting lineup had three hits in the win, while Marc Gould added a pair of hits.

Mohawk Trail’s Logan Moore scored four runs while Brady Gancarz had two hits and scored four runs. Grady Patenaude also had two hits for the Warriors.

Mahar 4, Franklin Tech 2 – Matt Vitello struck out nine in a complete-game outing for the Senators, which snapped a three-game losing streak and got back to the .500 mark at 3-3 overall.

Mahar scored three runs in the first inning and never trailed. Tech scored both of its runs in the top of the seventh on RBIs from Gavin Crossman and Maxon Brunette. Hunter Donahue finished with two hits for the Eagles, and Kyle Begos struck out four in a complete-game outing on the bump.

Morgan Softic, Hunter Brooks, Lucas Isrow and Will Barnes had two hits apiece to pace the hosts.

Turners 18, Smith Academy 2 — The Thunder won their third game in a row, racking up a season-high 18 runs en route to the lopsided defeat on Thursday in Hatfield.

Cam Burnett was 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBIs to pace Turners (6-2), which scored four runs in the first and eight more in the second. Alex Quezada and Kainen Stevens each had two hits and two RBIs for the visitors, while Joey Mosca, Deven Sloan and Jackson Cogswell all had a hit and two RBIs.

Mosca tossed three innings, striking out six, before Stevens and Brody Girard each tossed a scoreless inning of relief to finish off the Falcons.
