Big mistake

The Shelburne Mohawk Trail Committee is making a big mistake suggesting that the town open up the gorge to a new trail and multiple-use of the Deerfield river at this place.

This species gorge is fragile. For years it has been spared. When I was 12, I biked to the falls, crossed the Iron Bridge, and biked on Bridge Street to the gorge overlook.

It was and still is a wondrous place to see. It was magic. And is mysterious, because even kids could never get down to the rocks. We could get to the potholes, but not the rushing river on it way to the great Deerfield River Gorge.

Today, when we see bald eagles overhead we know they belong to the gorge. It is a road-less and trail-less ravine. Even the railroad track does not hug the river at that place. It is filled with life. It is filled with animals. It is filled with species as far as the eye can see.

It is at the heart of Shelburne and we need to just let it be
