The focus of our society needs to be on health — health of each other, health of our planet, health of other species, health of our air and water and soils, health of how we do business — and not on wealth. Not on amassing capitalistic greed in “things” we don’t need and that take from the earth and its poorest beings, human and otherwise. We are having a wake up call. This is not a rehearsal. We have many of these in the past and have failed our responsibility … our ability to respond in the right way. So if we do not learn our lessons by next fall, we are doomed to have more viruses in the future.

If we, as President Trump seems to advocate, focus instead on raping the earth’s resources (he calls it “opening up our country”) so we can be better consumers, then we will be as sick as we have made the earth. And we will continue to be sickened until we shift our values from fear to love and caring, from having to being, from sociopathic individualist narcissism to the common-wealth, collective well being, and out interconnectedness with all of life.

Thank you for espousing these values. I trust you and your colleagues are doing your best. But we need to do better. Keep reminding us of the changes we need to make in our lives to join ever more firmly into one voice, across the aisle, across all differences, so that we can be come a United States nation. If that is not possible, then I recommend we start with our towns, our counties, our regions, our states to be the kind of society we want to live in.

My deep respect, love and blessings go to you, your family and your good work in the world.

Rebecca King
