Rebutting ‘Green Energy Scam’

I am writing in response to the letter by David Kempf in the Recorder entitled “Green Energy Scam.”

It is true that 80% of global energy comes from fossil fuels, and therein lies the problem. CO2 emissions from burning coal account for 44% of the world total, and it’s the biggest source of the global temperature increase above pre-industrial temps (National Geographic, April 2nd 2020). We all know the health and environmental consequences of coal use and cheap natural gas which have contributed to their own decline in industrial countries.

Our climate (climate being the average temperature over 30 years) is changing. Today, it was announced by meteorologists that an updated 30-year climate normal adjustment that occurs every 10 years will be  0.440F warmer and 0.34” wetter than that based on data from 1981-2010, so there is no doubt that the climate is warming up. According to Kempf,  the public is being scammed by “green energy proponents (saying) they can do the impossible and prohibit the use of fossil fuel energy and impose “100% renewable energy…” (both “prohibit the use of” and “100% renewable energy” are Kempf’s words and interpretation) What has actually been legislated is speeding up the transition and investment to green energy, both wind and solar, as well as development of a requirement over time of net zero buildings. This time period is over 30 years up to 2050, so investment is gradual.

Many jobs have and will be created from something like a Green Energy deal with the manufacture and installation of wind and solar equipment, the air will be cleaner, and at the same time, the increase in the global temperature will be mitigated, maybe staving off the inevitable climate disaster that is imminent if we maintain the status quo with our use of fossil fuels. The scam on the public is not the “Green Energy” scam. The scam is the Republican/Trumpian “ostrich head-in-the-oil drum and coal-pile” scam that says let’s continue our old outdated ways like there is no tomorrow because climate change is going to happen anyway.
