Overcoming tribalism

Published: 6/26/2020 2:49:38 PM

After being bombarded by the news of cafeteria-food fight-style disagreements in the halls of Congress and elsewhere around the nation, and the worst human instincts that have surfaced in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the unconscionable brutality of too many police in too many places against my black fellow citizens, I was reminded of the words of Pope Francis to young people in Kenya in November 2015: “Overcoming tribalism is something we do with our ear: listening to others; with our heart: being open to others; and with our hands: holding out a hand to others.” You can replace the word tribalism with any or all of the following: exceptionalism, nativism, racism.
