No on Question 1

As a Greenfield property owner and taxpayer, I believe strongly that elected officials should be held accountable for their actions. This is not a criticism — it’s how a democracy works.

There is no City Council in America that doesn’t make mistakes — some of them expensive. This is why the Greenfield Charter includes the right to a citizen referendum.

But if you place this right on too high a limb — no one can reach it. An unobtainable right is the same as no right at all.

I think Greenfield citizens have used their referendum right responsibly, and as an appropriate check and balance on elected officials.

I am encouraging all Greenfield voters to vote “No on Question 1,” to keep the right to a referendum within reach — and to keep it handy for when it’s needed.
