ORANGE — Hoping to inform voters in advance of the 2020 census, Rep. Susannah Whipps, I-Athol, hosted an informational session at the Orange Senior Center last month.

Whipps welcomed Rep. Paul Mark, D-Peru, who brought with him members of his research staff and speakers from the Federal Census Bureau and Secretary of State William Galvin’s office, according to a press release about the informational session.

“I am so honored to be joined by my House colleague to discuss this important issue today and how it relates to our communities,” Whipps said. “The federal census numbers determine your representation and are used to determine levels of federal and state aide that comes to our region, so this count must be accurate.”

Mark spoke about the history of the census and its importance in drawing districts for the state Legislature and Congress.

“Our voice in Boston and Washington (D.C.) is determined by the official census numbers, which is why it is so important to have a full and accurate count,” he said. “The estimated population trend in Franklin County is either slow growth or small decline, so we need to make sure every effort is made to count every person and hold on to the political representation we are entitled to.”

People can file beginning in mid-March by telephone, online and by mail. For residents who do not use these means, the U.S. Census Bureau will be hiring part-time local employees to do in-home census visits, according to the release. If you are interested in a position, visit census.gov/jobs.
