WHATELY — Upon the request of the fire chief, the town will look to create a more formal process for alerting local officials when there’s an upcoming road race.

While there are no serious issues with the current system, Whately Fire Chief John Hannum asked the Board of Selectmen recently about creating a formal application. He said with road closures for a race, if there wasn’t enough notice, it could create an issue for residents if an emergency happened.

Annually, Whately is the home of the Mother’s Day half marathon, which Hannum said always goes smoothly, but if there were other races, it might not be as easy.

“We don’t want to do anything to disrupt these activities, but clearly we need to do something for our fire chief,” Selectwoman Joyce Palmer-Fortune said.

The Selectboard will try to make a formal application for those interested in hosting a road race in Whately to fill out. This way, first responders will know sooner of potential closed roads.
