SHUTESBURY — Well-water should be tested at least every 10 years, and the town’s Board of Health is offering residents a way to get theirs done at a 25-percent discount. The health board is hosting a “sampling day” on Sunday, Oct. 14, with a volume discount, if at least 25 households participate.

The water tests cost $100, but will cost $75 with the discount. The tests measure coliform and E. coli, nitrate, color, iron, manganese, pH, sodium, total dissolved solids, turbidity and chloride.

Test results will go directly to residents, not to the Board of Health. However, the board is interested in seeing the results of those willing to share them.

To participate, pickup sample bottles with attached instructions from a cardboard box upstairs in the Town Hall. Put your name and email address or phone number on the sign-up sheet. Disinfect your faucet with bleach or Chlorox wipes before taking a sample from it. Water samples are to be taken Sunday afternoon, kept chilled, then delivered to the Town Hall kitchen between 4 and 6 p.m. Bring the sample along with a $75 check made out to Howard Laboratories.

Contact the Board of Health if you absolutely can’t deliver the water on Sunday, but could bring it in early Monday morning. Return any unused bottles, as they belong to Howard Laboratories. Contact the Board of Health at: boardhealth@shutesbury.org for more information.
