GREENFIELD — While many students excitedly anticipate school vacation, for struggling families the break can mean increased food insecurity, with visits to food pantries surging during those weeks.

To ensure that local food pantries will have plenty to offer during the busy February vacation week, Women’s Way, the affinity group of United Way of Franklin County, is running its annual food drive, Supper for Six.

On Wednesday from 5:30 to 7 p.m., community members and workplaces are invited to pack a grocery bag with dinner ingredients such as pasta and sauce, beans and rice, and cooking oil and spices. The nonperishable items can be brought to the Episcopal Church of Saints James and Andrew for the Supper for Six collection, a United Way press release states.

New this year, Greenfield Savings Bank, Greenfield Cooperative Bank and People’s United Bank are running a friendly competition between their local branches to see who can collect the most bags of food, the release states.

Last year, just over 500 bags were donated and distributed to United Way partner agencies including Community Action Pioneer Valley, the Franklin County Community Meals program and Montague Catholic Social Ministries.

Formed in 2005 by a group of local women, Women’s Way fights for the health, education and financial stability of every person in Franklin County. According to the release, the group hosts two signature events each year: Supper for Six and Blooming Backpacks, a school supply drive to make sure every student is ready with school supplies for the new school year.
