The UMass football team will have a new offensive coordinator next fall. 

Steve Casula — who spent the last two seasons as both offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Minutemen — will be joining Sherrone Moore’s staff at the University of Michigan as the tight ends coach, per a report from rivals.com.

Casula, 36, has ties to the Wolverine program, as he was an offensive analyst at Michigan from 2019-21 before joining Don Brown at UMass. Casula will be replacing Grant Newsome, who moves over from coaching the tight ends to the offensive line for the Wolverines. 

Casula’s offense made strides this past fall. In 2022, his first year with the Minutemen, UMass ranked third worst in the FBS with 12.5 points per game. That improved to 23.2 points per game this past fall, as well as going from 265.8 yards per game in 2022 to 356.3 yards per game in 2023.

Prior to his time at Michigan, Casula was the offensive coordinator at Division 2 Ferris State from 2017-18. Casula’s annual salary at UMass was $265,200.
