DEERFIELD — Two Deerfield police officers were seriously injured during a traffic stop early Saturday morning after being hit by a person allegedly driving under the influence of drugs.

At about 2 a.m., Officers Timothy Boland and Nick Limoges had just placed a person under arrest on suspicion of driving drunk with a child in the car when another car struck them on Greenfield Road near Childs Cross Road, according to a statement posted to the department’s Facebook page. A marked police cruiser with its lights flashing was also struck.

The officers were able to call for help and state police along with Whatley police responded to the scene. South County EMS transported both officers to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield with serious but not life-threatening injuries, police said.

State police arrested the driver who hit the officers on suspicion of driving a vehicle under the influence of drugs, the statement read.

An investigation is ongoing, police said, and the suspect is expected to face multiple charges in Greenfield District Court.

In a separate Facebook post signed by Northampton Police Chief Jody Kasper, she expressed support for the hurt officers and Deerfield Police.

Kasper used the incident to remind the public that officers across Massachusetts are actively enforcing impaired driving laws in an effort to keep everyone safe.

“We're doing what we can, but we need drivers to take this issue seriously and to understand the potential outcomes of their poor decisions,” Kasper wrote.
