GREENFIELD — The show must go on — it just may look a little different than you remember.

On Thursday and Friday evening, Jack Golden of Jack Golden Productions performed for the first time on the rooftop of the city parking structure, where his audience watched from the comfort and safety of their vehicles.

The 30-minute one-man show — made up of three different pieces on “three sides of the same coin” — in some way reflects the uncertainty of the times. It’s a show that’s both comical and thought-provoking. Two shows are performed.

“I’m so glad we are all here together in this way, in these times,” Golden said after the first piece on Friday.

After all, Golden wasn’t initially sure how, or when, he would again have the opportunity to perform live.

“I’m a live performer, I’ve been doing it for decades,” Golden said. “This pandemic hit, and it was like, oh, OK, live performing is done at this point. I’m not going to be in theaters with hundreds of people.”

Golden said he knows there are lot of live-streamed performances online, but he wanted to find a way to perform for an audience in-person.

“I had this idea of … what about a drive-in theater in a parking lot?” he said. “Instead of watching a movie, you watch a live performance.”

Golden reached out to Linda McInerney, artistic director of Egg Tooth Productions, who told him she knew exactly the place for it — the top floor of the parking structure in Greenfield.

“I got totally energized about that possibility,” he said.

McInerney, who said Golden’s performance was made possible in part by a grant he received from the production company, said she worked closely with city officials to make the event possible. In particular, the production company had to make sure the performance complied with the constantly changing regulations with respect to the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the base of the structure, audience members were directed by McInerney to the roof of the building, where a parking assistant guided them to their “seat” for the show. They were instructed to remain within their vehicle throughout the performance.

Golden performed in the space in front of them, with McInerney nearby, working the sounds and lights.

“We, the Board of Directors and myself of Egg Tooth Productions, made the decision that we were going to jump into the challenges,” McInerney said. “We are in the new way of living and thinking. How can we, as an arts organization, … continue to support artists? How can we entertain? How can we lift spirits?”

McInerney said despite the challenges it took getting to opening night, the first night of performances “came together beautifully.”

She said the show sold out its first two weekends, but tickets are still available for the Aug. 13, 14, and 15 shows and can be purchased via Egg Tooth Productions by clicking “Experience now: Under the Stars.” Two shows are performed each night, with one at 8 p.m and the second at 9 p.m.
