SHELBURNE — After 27 years of police work in West County, Shelburne Police Chief Steven Walker will be ending his law enforcement career, because of a medical disability.

He plans to step down from his job by Oct. 10, he said in his letter of retirement to the Board of Selectmen.

“This decision has been a very difficult one, but in light of continuing and unresolved medical problems, affecting my vision, it is the correct one for both me and the town moving forward,” Walker wrote.

“The support that town administration and the residents of Shelburne have shown over my years here has been extraordinary, thank you to everyone,” Walker’s letter said. “While this is not the way I would have chosen to end my law enforcement career, I feel very fortunate to be able to finish it here in Shelburne, with fine officers in place that I will miss the pleasure of working with.”

He ended his letter with an offer to provide any needed assistance during the transition.

“This is something that has to happen for the best interests of Steve and his family,” said Selectmen’s Chairman Joseph Judd, who was visibly shaken, as he read Walker’s letter aloud.

“This is a bittersweet pill for me, because Steve was very special in regards to this position. We were very fortunate to have him.”

The letter was accepted with “deep regrets,” and the board discussed holding a community event where Walker could be recognized for his service.

Walker could not be reached for comment Tuesday. After getting a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice, Walker became a patrolman for the Buckland Police Department in 1989 and was promoted to police sergeant there in 1991.

In January 2007, Walker was hired to serve as the Shelburne police chief, a position he has held for the past nine years.
