GREENFIELD — Christmas is a time for giving. Greenfield Savings Bank employees took that sentiment to heart this year by leaving free scarves in public places throughout the Pioneer Valley.

“There are a lot of people who aren’t prepared when cold weather hits,” said Chelsea Bailey, who oversees the scarf-giving program, which began last year. The idea to give away scarves was suggested by an employee, and began earlier this winter. Most employees participated.

“We had an overwhelming response,” Bailey said. In total this Christmas season, 250 scarfs were left across the region in waiting rooms, on benches, hanging from trees in parks, and in a ‘Little Free Library’ in Conway.

Within a few weeks, all Bailey said all of them had been taken. “Every one I’ve seen in town is gone,” she said.
