GREENFIELD — The poetry deadline for the 27th annual Poet’s Seat Poetry Contest — March 5 — is approaching.

The Friends of the Greenfield Public Library is seeking poems for this contest, which is open to all Franklin County residents and students.

The top poems will be read at the Poet’s Seat celebration set for 7 p.m. on April 26 at Stoneleigh Burnham school. The grand prize for the first-place adult poet is the “poet’s seat” — a handcrafted, throne-like chair that goes home with the winning poet each year, until the next year’s first-prize poem is selected.

Contestants may submit up to three unpublished poems. Awards will be given for the first-, second- and third-place poems written by adults. Awards for four top poems are presented for poems written by contestants who enter the youth categories for 12- to 14-year olds or 15- to 18-year-olds.

Previous first-place adult winners may not submit poems, although top winners in the youth categories may submit when they enter a new age category. Contestants should indicate “Adult” or “Young Poet” in the lower right-hand corner of the sheet on the side the poem appears — but there should be no other identifying information on the front. On the back side of each poem, write your name, address, telephone number and email. The poems should be submitted on standard white paper, either printed clearly in ink or typed in plain typeface. Enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope to be notified by mail — otherwise all entry receipts will be notified by email.

Send entries to: Poet’s Seat Contest, Greenfield Public Library, 402 Main St., Greenfield, MA 01301. All entries must be postmarked by March 5.
