Discussion on Lake Mattawa rules continues

ORANGE — The Selectboard last week continued its discussion about posting signs stating clear, enforceable rules regarding behavior at Lake Mattawa.

Selectboard members, who are also park commissioners, had discussed the topic earlier in the month in response to a thread of social media comments complaining of public drinking, drug use and other issues at the lake.

Town Administrator Gabriele Voelker said Town Counsel Donna MacNicol advised that a bylaw is unnecessary, but members discussed the information they would like to see on posted signs. According to Voelker, MacNicol said the town cannot legally limit the beach area to Orange residents.

Former Selectboard member dies

ORANGE — Selectboard member Tom Smith mentioned during last week’s meeting the recent death of former Selectboard member Jean Chase. She was 87.

Smith said Chase lived in Orange her entire life and served on the board from 2001 to 2004. He said she won election following a recount, after it was initially believed she had lost.

“May she rest in peace,” Smith said. “She was a sweet lady.”
