GREENFIELD — Ever since he was a kid, Patrick Crowningshield has wanted to become a firefighter.

On Friday, his lifelong dream came true when he was sworn in as the Greenfield Fire Department’s newest full-timer. The 21-year-old Greenfield native said his mom is a nurse, so he was taught the value of helping people from a young age. Over the years, he did everything he could to work toward his goal of becoming a career firefighter, including joining Greenfield’s Call Force in 2014 and serving several other local departments.

“I love helping the community,” he said. “My life has pretty much revolved around helping people, and this is one of the biggest services that helps.”

Greenfield Fire Chief Robert Strahan said Crowningshield was chosen based on his past part-time firefighting experience, as well as his full-time experience as an EMT for MedCare Ambulance.

“He’s just a natural fit for moving from the Call Force up to the career force,” Strahan said.

Crowningshield was sworn-in by Town Clerk Deborah Tuttle during a ceremony at the firehouse Friday afternoon. He is scheduled to go to the nine-week, full-time firefighting academy in April.

“Patrick has worked very hard to get to where he is right now, but the journey has just started and there’s a lot more hard work ahead of him, and he’s going to do a great job,” Strahan said.

“This is the best job in the world,” he told Crowningshield. “It has its worst moments, but it’s truly the best job in the world, and you’re working with some of the best firemen you’ll ever, ever, ever meet.”
