GREENFIELD — Karen S. Cousland is the new principal of Greenfield Middle School and the Math and Science Academy. Her first day was Wednesday.
“I am so excited to be joining a talented team of teachers and to meet the active parent community at Greenfield Middle School and the Math and Science Academy,” Cousland said. “I am genuinely looking forward to having the opportunity to meet everyone in person, and am excited about working together in the future.”
Cousland was selected based on the results of a survey of parents, according to Greenfield Superintendent Jordana B. Harper. Nearly 70 percent of respondents said they wanted a principal who engages well with students and manages discipline well; over 50 percent identified the ability to communicate well with parents as a top priority; 35 percent identified outgoingness and visibility as a top priority.
“After interviewing nearly a dozen candidates, I am confident that Karen’s (Cousland) skills and track record will serve our district very well for years to come,” said Harper.
Most recently, Cousland worked as the assistant principal of Jabish Brook Middle School in Belchertown. From 2006 to 2016, she worked at West Springfield High School as the chair of the department of business, computer and technology engineering, and served as an interim assistant principal for the 2014-2015 school year. From 1996 to 2005, she worked at Turners Falls High School, first teaching physical education, then science and technology.
Cousland has a master’s degree from UMass Amherst in curriculum design, with a focus in math, science and instructional technology. She also has a Sheltered English Immersion endorsement from the state, a requirement for working with students learning English as a second language.
