NEW SALEM — The Highway Department will get just what it wanted this holiday season after residents voted unanimously at a Special Town Meeting on Tuesday to buy a $73,000 pickup truck with a plow and dump body.

The money will come out of the capital stabilization account to replace a truck that needs extensive repairs.

According to Town Coordinator Kathy Neal, the new truck, from Marcotte Ford in Holyoke, was discovered on the state’s bid list and the dealer agreed to hold onto it until a Special Town Meeting could be held. Neal said a check will be written shortly and the vehicle should soon be in the town’s possession.

She said there was some urgency regarding this purchase, as the pickup truck will be used to plow snow on New Salem’s smaller roads.

The $73,000 purchase was the sole article on Tuesday’s Special Town Meeting warrant. The meeting was held at Town Hall at 7 p.m.
