NORTHFIELD — Kevin Burke, the new principal of Pioneer Valley Regional School, will be at a meet-and-greet Tuesday, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the school library.

Burke replaces Principal Jean Bacon, who has been at Pioneer since fall 2016. Bacon announced her departure in March, citing personal reasons.

Burke is leaving a job as principal of Easthampton High School, which he has held since 2016. During his tenure, the state Attorney General’s Office issued a finding in 2017 hat black and Hispanic students had been disciplined more severely than others.

When Burke announced his departure in February, he and Easthampton Superintendent Allison LeClair did not say if the finding had influenced his decision. At the time, Burke specifically cited a wish to spend more time with his family.

Burke said this week that he wanted to come to Pioneer for a new start, and because he is already familiar with the area. Burke has an associate degree from Greenfield Community College, and later went to a four-year college. He has recently toured Pioneer and met the staff, he said.

“So I’m very familiar with the area. I’m excited to be up in Northfield, Bernardston, Leyden and Warwick,” Burke said.

Burke has been in the Easthampton Public Schools system for 11 years, first as a middle school math teacher, then as assistant principal of the high school. Before Easthampton, he had worked in Springfield schools for four years.
