HEATH — After learning of the poor condition of the Route 8A bridge over West Branch Brook during routine inspections, the state Department of Transportation is now accepting public comments regarding a $6 million bridge replacement project.

Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2025 and be completed by the spring of 2027. Of the total project cost, 80% will be paid by the federal government and 20% will come from the state.

The current bridge on Route 8A was built in 1939. It now has cracking beams, exposed rebar and deteriorating concrete. The new bridge is designed to last 75 years with hopes of improving accessibility and minimizing inconvenience to the public.

One of the biggest concerns about the construction of a new bridge is the 42-minute detour that would come with its temporary closure. Drivers would have to go through Colrain and Buckland on Adamsville Road to Route 112, Route 2 and Route 8A. To avoid full closure, the bridge will be completed in two parts, allowing for traffic to pass on one side for the full length of construction, according to MassDOT officials.

“The bridge will be closed for less than five nights over the two-year construction period,” William Brown, bridge project manager at MassDOT, said during last week’s public hearing on the project.

MassDOT intends to have warning signs, traffic details and portable traffic control signals to assist with directing alternating traffic over the bridge during construction.

MassDOT designed the new bridge to have cantilever abutments and precast concrete beams and deck. The original abutments of the existing bridge will remain in place under the new structure. The use of precast concrete beams and deck, across the top of the bridge, was chosen because it requires less maintenance, according to Brown. He also explained that the use of precast concrete allows the project to be done with phased construction, allowing for traffic to pass through during the work.
