In the spring of 1986, a parent approached me to supervise a group of Frontier Regional High School students in a weightlifting program. According to the athletic director, the program needed an adult supervisor to oversee the program.

I agreed to give it a try. The program ran three nights a week. As I arrived at the school for my first supervisory day, several students were already waiting to participate in the program. The session lasted about two hours. At the end of the session and without any prompting, all the weightlifting equipment was put back to their proper places. The students were very organized in their responsibilities to this program.

By the end of the week, I was hearing Blake Gilmore’s name mentioned by the students. I soon learned Blake had initially set up the program with bars, plates, dumb bells, and a leg machine. He also set up the weightlifting program for the students. Blake had spent long hours creating the entire program and supplying the weights for the students to use before my arrival at the school. What impressed me more was the responsibility and respect he instilled in this group of students.

To this day, Frontier has a weightlifting program started by Blake Gilmore in 1978. He is a committed person willing to give his time and energy. Blake Gilmore exhibits strong leadership skills. I fully support Blake for the position of Deerfield Select Board member.
