Not so long ago I watched as a small team of volunteers weathered a cold and windy Saturday morning to help beautify our Main Street by removing layers of tattered and old flyers from the street light poles. With razor blades and cleaning solvent in hand they cleaned dozens of light poles up and down the streets only to have their efforts undone by some inconsiderate, and in a few cases, juvenile, people who couldn’t respect the effort of these volunteers by putting up flyers on the clean poles. One bar owner felt their establishment needed advertising so badly that they put up their flyers by wrapping them in an enormous amount of tape around the newly cleaned street light poles. Help me understand why these people felt they needed to undo the volunteers’ work and efforts. I imagine the people posting these flyers are the same ones complaining on social media that Greenfield is a dump. It’s just a reflection of their inconsideration and in one case, immaturity. To those volunteers, I thank you. Your time, energy and intentions are not lost on me.
