GILL — Responding firefighters quickly quelled a blaze at a two-story house on River Road Friday night, resulting in no injuries.

Fire Chief Gene Beaubien said the call came in at around 5 p.m. for a first-alarm fire at 4 River Road. Gill firefighters arrived quickly and, with a “quick, excellent attack,” extinguished the blaze.

“We used a tanker shuttle for water, and the supply in our tanks,” Deputy Fire Chief William Kimball said. “We had the fire under control rather quickly, and there was no need to set up a draft site or anything like that.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Gill Fire Department, Gill Police Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office. Kimball noted officials believe the fire started on the first floor of the house, and that the damage extended “minimally” into the basement and second floor.

“This was a well done job by all,” Kimball said. “Arriving units were able to apply hose lines to all the floors of the house, and were able to knock it down quickly and have it under control.”

Kimball said a woman is the sole occupant of the house, and she was not home at the time of the fire. The American Red Cross is helping the woman secure temporary housing, he added.

There were chickens that were safely rescued, and Beaubien said one of the first responding firefighters saw a cat escape out of a window.

Kimball said the Gill Fire Department was assisted by firefighters from Montague Center, Turners Falls, Deerfield, Erving, Greenfield, Bernardston, Northfield and Winchester, N.H.

A section of Main Road was temporarily closed during firefighters’ response.
