SOUTH DEERFIELD — The Frontier field hockey team continues to hold opposing offenses in check.

Tuesday’s game against defending MIAA Division 2 state champion Longmeadow might be their best defensive effort yet.

For the second time in five days, Frontier met Longmeadow in Suburban League action, but unlike Friday’s 1-0 loss, the Hawks managed to take home a point in Tuesday’s rematch. Kyra Richards stopped all five shots she faced, as the two clubs played to a 0-0 draw.

“To come out with a tie today, I’m extremely proud of the girls,” Frontier coach Missy Mahar said. “Last year going to Longmeadow, I think our goalie had 26 saves. It’s a new season, obviously, but they’re a very strong program so to be able to compete and hold them scoreless is very promising.”

Longmeadow held a 5-0 shot advantage and a 13-0 edge in penalty corners on Tuesday, but Frontier (0-2-2) kept the defending state champs off the board. In front of Richards, defenders Hailey Hutkoski and Claire Kirkendall powered a defensive unit that limited changes in the final third.

“Having those experienced players in the back and grounding our defense has been a key to us holding other teams off the board this year,” Mahar said.

Frontier, which has allowed just two goals in four games, will look to break through in both the win and goal column (the Hawks still haven’t scored this year) for the first time on Thursday when it hosts West Springfield (4 p.m.).

Franklin Tech 8, Hampshire 1 — Hannah Gilbert buried a hat trick and Kate Trudeau tallied a pair of goals to lift the visiting Eagles to a dominate 8-1 County League victory on Tuesday in Westhampton.
