GREENFIELD — Following a slew of close games to open the season, the Greenfield boys basketball team put together a full 32 minute effort to pull away against Mahar on Tuesday.

The Green Wave held a narrow 12-10 lead after eight minutes but turned it up a notch in the second quarter. Greenfield went on an 18-1 run midway through the frame and ultimately outscored the Senators 23-8 in the quarter to hold a 35-18 lead at the half.

Greenfield didn’t allow Mahar to get back in the game in the second half, outscoring it 20-14 in the third quarter before cruising to a 71-45 Hampshire League South victory at Nichols Gymnasium.

“We’ve been playing ‘C’ basketball all year,” Green Wave coach Angelo Thomas said. “I thought today I’d put us in the ‘B’ or a B-plus’ range. It’s good for January. This was the most complete game we’ve played all year and we did it against a Mahar team that had only lost one game going into this one.”

The loss was indeed just the second of the season for Mahar (7-2), with Senators coach Chad Softic crediting Greenfield (5-2) for being ready to go from the opening tip on.

“Credit to Greenfield,” Softic said. “They were emotionally invested tonight and we weren’t. As a coach I take ownership of that. We weren’t ready to play. I thought after yesterday’s practice that we would come in and play well. It just wasn’t good enough tonight.”

Jon Breor was a force inside for the Green Wave, finishing with 18 points. Caleb Thomas (17) and Jacob Blanchard (10) joined him in double-figures, Caleb Murray and Grayson Thomas both scored eight points while Ollie Postera and Petru Cojocaru each finished with four points in the win.

After playing most of its early-season schedule on the road, Angelo Thomas said he’s looking forward to more games at Nichols Gymnasium the rest of the way.
