Overtime loomed between the Smith Vocational and Athol girls soccer teams on Friday.

Neither team was able to generate a ton of offensive opportunities during the MIAA Division 5 preliminary round in Northampton. The 31st-seeded Vikings and 34th-seeded Bears seemed destined for OT, until Jayanna Daniels saved the day.

Daniels tallied the game’s only goal just before the final whistle, lifting Smith Vocational into the Round of 32 via a 1-0 victory.

The Vikings will play at No. 2 Monson on Monday at 2 p.m. Athol closed out its season with a 12-4-3 record. 

Girls volleyball

Div. 4 Round of 32

Frontier 3, Saint Paul Diocesan 0 — The third-seeded Redhawks didn't mess around at Goodnow Gymnasium on Friday, cruising into the Round of 16 with a 25-6, 25-12, 25-18 sweep over No. 30 Saint Paul Diocesan. 

Frontier (18-5) advanced to face No. 19 Lowell Catholic on Monday at 6 p.m.

Caroline Deane finished with 13 kills and two assists, Allie Pierce dished 18 assists and added six aces, Gabby Adams tallied five kills and two aces while Kate DeMaio put down four kills and three aces for the Redhawks.

Div. 5 Round of 32

Turners 3, Madison Park Vocational 0 — Taylor Greene led the way with 23 assists, four kills and three digs while Madi Liimatainen smashed 12 kills and five aces while coming up with six digs as the third-seeded Thunder advanced to the Round of 16 with a 25-11, 25-20, 25-13 sweep over No. 35 Madison Park on Friday.

Turners (20-2) will host No. 19 Springfield International in the Round of 16 on Monday at 6 p.m.

Tatiana Carr Williams (six kills), Janelle Massey (nine kills, four aces), Ian Bastarache (three aces) and Maddie Dietz (two aces, eight digs) played well for the Thunder in the win. 

SICS 3, Franklin Tech 2 — It was a back-and-forth match between the 14th-seeded Eagles and 19th-seeded Bulldogs on Friday in Turners. 

Franklin Tech opened up a 2-1 lead but SICS stormed back to win the fourth set and rode that momentum into the fifth set to upset the Eagles with a 16-25, 29-27, 23-25, 25-18, 15-13 victory. 

Lea Chapman tallied one ace, nine kills, nine digs and seven blocks, Brooke Smith finished with six aces, three kills, two digs and one assist, Shelby O’Leary recorded two aces, 16 digs and 13 assists while Jenna Petrowicz (four aces, four kills, 15 digs, one block), Emma Petersen (six aces, seven kills, six digs, one assist, two blocks) and Skylei LaPan (six digs) had big games for Franklin Tech (14-7). 

Lenox 3, Athol 0 — After knocking off Deerborn STEM in the prelims Thursday, the 23rd-seeded Bears were unable to pull off the upset in the Round of 32 against No. 10 Lenox, falling 25-16, 25-12, 25-21 in Lenox on Friday. 

The Millionaires (14-7) advanced to play No. 7 Whitinsville Christian in the Round of 16. 

Alma White, Kahlen Gregory and Laney Florentino each cracked two kills, Anna Duquette had a kill and an ace while Abby Lutz made four digs for Athol (8-13). 

Boys soccer

Div. 5 prelim 

Charlestown 3, Athol 0 — The No. 29 Bears were unable to get on the scoreboard against the 36th-seeded Townies, falling in Athol on Friday. 

Charlestown (9-3-2) moves on to play No. 4 Boston International in the Round of 32. Athol closed out its season with a 14-5 record. 

KIPP Academy Lynn 3, Turners 1 — The Thunder couldn’t spring the road upset against the 22nd-ranked club from Lynn in a season-ending prelim loss on Friday.

Yolvin Ovalle scored the lone Turners goal on a penalty kick with four minutes to play. 

Turners Falls finished its first season back as a varsity program in a decade with a final record of 6-5-1. KIPP advanced to play at No. 11 Ayer Shirley on Monday.

Salem Academy Charter 4, Greenfield 0 — Clinging to just a 1-0 lead into the second half, No. 20 Salem Academy scored three goals in the final 40 minutes, pulling away for a preliminary round win on Friday at Bertram Field in Salem.

Greenfield, which finished its season 11-7-1 overall, received 12 saves in net from goalie Liam Grahame-Lawson and two more from Nick Prasol.
