H.S. Roundup: Big day for Mohawk Trail as Emmett Johnson blazes through mile, Riley Giard tosses five-inning no-hitter (PHOTOS)

Emmett Johnson and Chay Mojallali put on a show for the Mohawk Trail boys track team on Tuesday against Athol. 

Johnson blazed through the mile in a time of four minutes, 29.3 seconds and also won the 400 meters (57.5 seconds) while Mojallali won the triple jump (30 feet, 9.5 inches), high jump (5-10) and the 110 hurdles (17.4) as the Warriors walked away with a 99-28 win over the Bears in Buckland. 

Johnson’s time in the mile is the fastest at Mohawk Trail since Mark Miller set the school record in 1999. 

Other winners for Mohawk Trail were Tanner Biagini the long jump (16-4.25) and the 100 (12.6), Vincent Gauthier in the 200 (26.6), Will VanVleet in the shot put (33-9.75), Wyatt Alling in the pole vault (8-0), Spence in the 800 (2:27.7) and Kuoppala in the 2 mile (13:52.6). The Warriors won the 4x100 (52.7) and 4x400 (4:16.5) relays. 

For Athol, Riley Reed won the javelin (116-7) and Nicholas Leblanc took the discus (101-11). 

Girls track

Mohawk Trail 123, Athol 15 — Zephyr Jetzon won the long jump (13-3), the 100 (14.2) and the 200 (29.7), Natalie Lanoue earned first in the high jump (4-4) and the 400 (72.5), Anya Reid took the mile (6:33.7) and 2 mile (15:32.6) and Virginia Krezmien earned first place finishes in the triple jump (28-3.75) and the 800 (2:57.3) to propel the Warriors past the Bears in Buckland on Tuesday. 

Also for Mohawk Trail Savannah Simmons took the pole vault (6-0), Morgan Raffa came in first in the javelin (69-11), Lily Jenks earned first in the 100 hurdles (21.6) and Cleo Gardner won the 400 hurdles (92.4). The Warriors won the 4x100 (57.3) and 4x400 (5:16.7) relays. 

Sydney Gauvin won the discus (63-2) while Karleigh Chase took the shot put (25-8) for Athol.

Mohawk Trail 15, Smith Academy 2 (5) — Riley Giard tossed a five-inning no-hitter, striking out four along the way to lead the Warriors to a Franklin County League East win over the Falcons in Hatfield on Tuesday.

It was the second five-inning no-hitter of the year for Giard, who also accomplished the feat in a season-opening win over Putnam on March 30.

Rachel Pease smashed a double while Addie Loomis, Abby Moffatt and Giard each knocked a pair of hits for Mohawk Trail.

It was the second win in a row for the Warriors (4-5), which get right back at it on Wednesday with a game against Hopkins Academy.

Baseball

Greenfield 10, Turners 7 (8) – The Thunder scored two in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game 7-7 and force extra innings. The Green Wave put three runs on the board in the top of the eighth and Turners was unable to respond, with Greenfield walking away with an independent victory under the lights at the Bourdeua Fields Complex on Tuesday night.

Jackson Campbell got the win on the mound for the Green Wave, striking out two in one and one-third innings of relief work. Caleb Thomas tossed the first six innings for Greenfield, recording nine strikeouts. 

Jon Marchefka cracked a pair of doubles, a single and drove in a run for the Green Wave. Michael Pierce smacked a home run, a single and drove in two runs, Thomas knocked three hits and Campbell had two hits in the win. 

Alex Quezada struck out seven in seven and one-thirds innings work for Turners. Levin Prondecki smashed three hits, one a double, and drove in three runs while Cam Burnett, Derek Wissmann and Dylan Shinall each had a hit and an RBI in the loss.  

Frontier 11, Smith Academy 4 (8) — The Redhawk bats came through to stave off a comeback attempt from the Falcons in Hatfield on Tuesday. 

Frontier took a 3-0 lead after two, but Smith Academy’s Griffin Smiarowski kept the Redhawks off the scoreboard the next five innings while the Falcons scored two in the third and one in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. 

The Redhawks lit it up in the eighth, scoring eight runs and taking advantage when Smiarowski was pulled from the game due to hitting the 115 pitch count limit with one out in the eighth come away with an independent win. 

“Happy to get the win,” Frontier coach Chris Williams said. “The new pitch count rule had an enormous impact on this game. I feel for [Smith Academy coach] Mike [Afflitto] for having to pull him and feel for the kid to have to be pulled in that situation. He had an excellent day throwing out there.” 

Liam Skribiski-Banack had a big day at the plate for Frontier, knocking a single, a double and a triple and knocking in an RBI. Wyatt Edes had a single, a triple and three RBIs, Miles Ferreira brought in a run with a double, Grayson Loos tallied a pair of hits, Tyler Cusson cracked a pair of hits and drove in a run while Alex Gochinski and Aiden West hit safely in the win. 

Edes struck out two in two and two-thirds innings work before Skribiski-Banack closed out the game, striking out eight along the way. Smiarowski went 7 1/3 innings for the Falcons, recording 11 strikeouts and scattering nine hits. At the plate Smiarowski tallied two triples, a single and drove in a run. 

Boys volleyball

Frontier 3, PV Christian 0 — Brady Burch put down 12 kills while Jesse Kurkulonis smashed seven kills as the Redhawks cruised to a 25-18, 25-8, 25-13 sweep against the Eagles in Springfield on Tuesday. 

 Jack Carey tallied five kills, Aleks Carey and Asa Jackson each recorded three kills while Ngawang Deter dished 19 assists and Tavo Vincent-Warner distributed 13 assists in the win. 

Girls tennis

Frontier 4, SICS 1 — Sydney Scanlon picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win in No. 1 singles while Maddie Powers walked away with a 6-0, 6-0 win in No. 2 singles to lead the Redhawks to a win in Springfield on Tuesday. 

Ultimate

Four Rivers 15, Northampton 5 — Kolin Broderick had three goals and two assists while Isaiah Goleman tallied four goals to lead the Otters past the Blue Devils on Tuesday.
