H.S. Roundup: Turners boys soccer wins first game since reviving program

The Turners Falls boys soccer team is in the win column for the first time in 10 years. 

The Thunder — who reinstated their boys soccer program this fall after last playing in 2013 — earned their first win of the season on Monday with a 4-2 triumph over Pioneer. 

David Klempner finished with a pair of goals while Yolvin Ovalle and Moises Borraye also found the back of the net for Turners. Rojelio Galvez dished a pair of assists in the victory. 

Kurt Redeker and Alex McClelland scored for Pioneer, with Matan Lerman-Smith assisting both goals. 

Greenfield 5, Sci-Tech 1 — The Green Wave found the back of the net twice in the final five minutes of the first half and carried that momentum into the final 40 minutes of action, where they tallied three times to earn a Schmid League win in Springfield on Monday. 

Caleb Thomas opened the scoring in the 36th minute off an assist from Clivens Carter Michel. Jack Laurie scored on an unassisted goal in the 38th minute to tive Greenfield a 2-0 lead at the break. 

Sci-Tech scored in the 48th minute but Carter Michel answered one minute later for the Green Wave on an assist from Jacob Blanchard. Thomas then scored his second of the game in the 66th minute on an assist from Blanchard before William Pierre closed out the scoring in the 77th minute off a pass from Laurie. 

Liam Grahame-Lawson made one save in goal for Greenfield.

Girls soccer

Athol 2, Mahar 1 — Kyluh Blundon and Liz Mailloux found the back of the net to help keep the Bears unbeaten with a win over rival Mahar on Monday in Athol. 

Blundon opened the scoring by smashing home a rebound off a shot from Mailloux. Mailloux then scored in the second half on a blast from outside the box. 

Logan Burke made a penalty kick for Mahar’s lone goal. Ava Adams made 13 saves for Athol while Alivia Patch stopped 11 shots for the Senators. 

Volleyball

Westfield 3, Frontier 2 — The Redhawks stormed out to a 2-0 lead but the Bombers fought their way back in to force a fifth set. With all the momentum, Westfield completed a 22-25, 22-25, 26-24, 26-24, 15-9 comeback victory over visiting Frontier on Monday in an Eastern League contest. 

Caroline Deane led the way with 14 kills and two aces for the Redhawks. Gabby Adams put down nine kill, Kate DeMaio and Olivia Machon each had six kills while Allie Pierce dished 26 assists in the loss. 

Amherst 3, Turners 1 — The Thunder took on the defending Western Mass. Class A champs on the road on Monday, falling 25-13, 25-22, 16-25, 25-13.
