The Frontier girls soccer team looked like it was in good shape heading into the half against Smith Academy on Wednesday. 

Maddie Bennett scored to give the Redhawks a 1-0 lead at the break, but Caitlin Graves tallied twice for the Falcons in the second half. Frontier was unable to answer, with Smith Academy able to walk away with a 2-1 independent victory in Hatfield. 

Madelyn Fagan assisted Bennett’s goal while Anna Scagel assisted both of Graves’ scores. 

Mount Greylock 4, Mahar 0 — Lily McDermott and Gabriella Nicastro each scored twice for the Mounties, which pulled away with an independent win over the Senators in Orange on Wednesday. 

Alivia Patch made 16 saves for Mahar. 

“Mt. Greylock is the No. 2 team in the state for a reason,” Senators coach Chad Softic said, “but we need to be more responsible with our play than we were tonight. You can get away with it against lesser teams but not tonight. Alivia Patch kept us in the game in the first half and she's been great all year.” 

Boys soccer

Athol 8, PV Christian 2 — Antonio Carbone finished with a hat trick, propelling the Bears to a Tri-County League win against the Eagles in Athol on Wednesday. 

Aiden Kirwin scored twice while Abduli Gilmore, Karim Thompson and Elhadj also found the back of the net. Kirwin and Blaise each had two assists while Carbone added an assist in the win.

Franklin Tech 4, St. Mary’s 2 — Four different Eagles found the back of the net in a Tri-County League win over the Saints in Turners on Wednesday. 

Lucas Gadway, Ricki Perez, John Gheorghita and Jaxon Kotright had those Tech goals, Gadway’s in the first half while the other three came during the final 40 minutes of action. 

Preston Duvall, Mason Thurston and Kotright recorded the assists in the win. 

SICS 2, Turners 1 — Yolvin Ovalle scored the lone Thunder goal in a loss to the Bulldogs in Turners on Wednesday. 

Volleyball

Franklin Tech 3, Athol 1 — Jenna Petrowicz led the way with eight aces, seven kills and eight digs while Lea Chapman added six kills and 10 digs for the Eagles, which picked up a 25-15, 19-25, 25-14, 25-19 Northern League win over the Bears in Turners on Wednesday. 

Brooke Smith (one ace, four kills, one assist), Hannah Hackett (four digs), Shelby O’Leary (one ace, two kills, six digs, 17 assists) and Amelia Rider (two aces, three kills, eight digs) helped lead Franklin Tech to victory. 

Laney Florentino (six kills, two assists, four aces), Giana Vaillancourt (four kills, five assists, one ace), Anna Duquette (three kills, one ace) and Alma White (one kill, seven assists) played well for Athol in the loss. 

Mohawk Trail 3, Pioneer 0 — Palmer King put down 11 aces and three kills while dishing 12 assists as the Warriors came away with a 25-14, 25-8, 25-5 sweep of the Panthers in Buckland on Wednesday. 

Riley Giard put down five kills and four aces while Grace Davenport, Sophia Goodnow and Maddie Cosentino each had two kills in the win. 

Frontier 3, Minnechaug 0 — Caroline Deane celebrated her Senior Night with 15 kills and seven digs, helping the Redhawks pull away with a 25-10, 25-19, 25-18 sweep over Minnechaug at Goodnow Gymnasium on Wednesday. 

Senior Gabby Adams tallied eight kills, three assists and four aces, senior Kate DeMaio finished with nine kills and one ace while senior Allie Pierce dished 29 assists and added six aces in the victory. 

Golf

Turners 168, Athol 218 — Joey Mosca was the match medalist with a 34 while Jack Day (39), Darian Burnett (47) and Reese Ewell (48) also scored for the Thunder in a win over the Bears at Ellinwood Country Club on  Wednesday. 

Ethan Heuer (47), Dominik St. Andre (50), Brandon Adams (55) and Rafael Lopez (66) competed for Athol. 

Deerfield Academy results

Four Deerfield Academy teams were in action on Wednesday. Its volleyball team beat Hotchkiss (3-1), the DA girls soccer team tied Worcester (2-2), the Big Green field hockey team lost to Westmin ster in overtime (3-2) and the DA boys soccer team lost to Loomis (5-0).

Frontier 5, South Hadley 0 — The Redhawks earned their ninth shutout of the season on Tuesday following a Moriarty League victory over the Tigers in South Deerfield. 

Nico Fasulo scored off an Aidan Valderrama assist to give Frontier a 1-0 lead at the half. 

Max Rajballie, Rosco Palmer (2) and Kasiac Yath went on the score in the final 40 minutes to put the game away. Chanhee Son, Valderrama and Gus Radner tallied second half assists while Owen Babb and Jack Cusson each made one save in the win. 

Four Rivers 5, Putney 1 — Christian Dimitriou tallied a hat trick while Cooper Whitney and Kolin Broderick each scored a goal to help the Otters pick up a win on Tuesday.
