Volleyball

Melrose 3, Frontier 2 — The Redhawks took Melrose — the No. 3 ranked team in Div. 2 — to five sets on Saturday but were unable to come out with a win in that final set, falling 26-24, 23-25, 27-25, 24-26, 15-6 in Melrose.

“It was an extremely close and competitive match,” Frontier coach Sean MacDonald said. “Had some chances in the first and third but made a few consecutive errors at the end to let it slip away. Melrose also has a 6-foot-5 middle blocker that caused us a lot of problems for our hitters at the net. I think both teams got better today and that’s why we schedule them.”

Caroline Deane led the way with 16 kills and six aces for the Redhawks. Gabby Adams put down 10 kills and two aces, Olivia Machon had eight aces and five kills, Kate DeMaio recorded seven kills and two assists while Allie Pierce dished 34 assists in the loss.
