High schools: MIAA field hockey brackets revealed Tuesday

The MIAA state field hockey tournament brackets were revealed on Tuesday, with three Recorder area teams making the Div. 4 field. 

Frontier, the Western Mass. Class C champs, received the highest seed of those three, coming in at No. 12. The Redhawks (9-6-4) will host No. 21 Westport (12-6) at a date and time to be determined. 

Greenfield (10-6-3), which fell to Frontier in the Class C finals, comes in as the No. 13 and will host No. 20 Northbridge (8-8-2) on Friday at 2:30 p.m.

Franklin Tech (16-2-1) reached the Class B finals and received the No. 17 seed in the Div. 4 field. The Eagles will head east to face No. 16 Stoneham (9-8-1) on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The state volleyball brackets came out on Monday, with Frontier, the Western Mass. Class B champions and defending Div. 5 state champions, seeded No. 3 in the Div. 4 field. The Redhawks (16-5) await the winner of No. 30 Saint Paul Diocesan (10-6) and No. 35 Bay Path RVT (10-10) in the Round of 32. 

Turners, the Class D champions, parlayed its strong season into the No. 3 seed in the Div. 5 field. The Thunder (18-2) will host the winner of No 30 Pioneer (6-12) and No. 35 Madison Park Vocational (12-8) in the Round of 32 on Friday at 6 p.m. The Panthers will play Madison Park on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Northfield the prelims. 

Athol (7-12) received the No. 23 seed and will host No. 42 Deerborn STEM Academy (12-4) on Thursday at 5:30 in the prelims. 

Mohawk Trail (12-5) and Franklin Tech (14-6) both are in the Round of 32. The Warriors received the No. 13 seed and will host the winner of No. 20 Cape Cod RVT (14-4) and No. 45 Pacific Rim Academy (7-4) while the Eagles will host the winner of No. 19 SICS (9-11) and No. 46 Roxbury Prep (11-7).

On Friday the state football playoffs begin, with both Franklin Tech and Athol making the field. 

Franklin Tech (6-2) comes in as the No. 15 seed and will travel to the South Shore to face No. 2 Carver (8-0) on Friday at 6:30. Athol (5-3) is the No. 14 seed and will head out to the Berkshires to face No. 3 Hoosac Valley (8-0) on Saturday at 1 p.m. 

MIAA Div. 3 golf

Turners’ Joey Mosca had a big outing at the MIAA Div. 3 state golf tournament at Sterling National Country Club on Monday. 

On the rainy day, Mosca shot an 80, placing him in a tie for fifth. The senior was the lone Thunder golfer to qualify. 

Following a third place finish at the Western Mass. Div. 3 sectional, the Franklin Tech golf team traveled to Sterling and earned an 11th place team finish with a score of 375. 

Brady Booska was the top Eagle scorer, finishing in a tie for 16th with a round of 83. Gabe Mota (42nd, 88), Tyler Lafountain (75th, 101) and Will Belval (77th, 103) rounded out the scorers for Franklin Tech. Braeden Talbot (80th, 110) also competed for the Eagles.  

St. John Paul’s Jack Carstensen was the top individual with a 74 while Weston was the team winner with a score of 322.
