H.S. Roundup: Franklin Tech volleyball falls to Norfolk Aggie in MVADA Small School Vocational title game

It didn’t go the Franklin Tech volleyball team’s way on Monday. 

Hosting Norfolk Aggie Tech in the championship game of the MVADA Small School Vocational Championship, the Eagles kept it close but were unable to steal a set, suffering a 3-0 loss. 

Norfolk Aggie won the opening set 25-15, Tech kept it close in the second but ultimately fell 25-22 before Norfolk closed things out with a 25-15 win in the third. 

Lea Chapman smashed four kills, made two blocks and came up with three digs, Shelby O’Leary finished with two aces, one kill, six digs and six assists while Jenna Petrowicz tallied five aces, four kills, five digs and one assist for the Eagles. 

Franklin Tech advanced to the finals after earning a 3-1 win over Smith Vocational on Saturday in the semis.

Chapman (12 kills, eight digs, one block), Abby Carlo (one kill, two digs), O’Leary (one ace, two kills, three digs, 10 assists) and Emma Petersen (eight aces, five kills, eight digs) played well in the win. 

State golf

Players battled through the elements during the MIAA Div. 3 state golf tournament at Sterling National Country Club on Monday. 

Turners’ Joey Mosca, competing as an individual, earned a fifth place finish.

Non-playoff games

Girls soccer

Athol 3, Franklin Tech 3 — The third matchup of the season between the Bears and the Eagles ended in a 3-3 tie on Monday in a non-playoff game. 

Hannah Cardoso scored on an indirect free kick assisted by Aubrielle Brockney while Skyla Williams tied the game late off an assist from Elizabeth Mailloux for Athol. The Bears benefited from an own-goal in the first half. 

Anna Kolodziej scored off an assist from Ella Kolodziej in the first half before Kyra Goodell and Mia Marigliano tallied for the Eagles in the second half. Ella Kolodziej had an assist on Goodell’s goal. 

Ava Adams stopped 16 shots for Athol while Kylee Gamache made six saves for Franklin Tech. 

Greenfield 3, Pioneer 1 — Elderina Cecunjanin, Tayler Bergeron and Mia Snedeker scored for the Green Wave to defeat the Panthers in a non-playoff contest on Monday. 

Snedeker added an assist while Annie Cobileanschi came up with seven saves for Greenfield. 

Boys soccer

Four Rivers 7, BART 0 — Cooper Whitney scored twice while Caleb Bird Richards, Alex Shutta, Henry Schwerin, Eliot Sanborn and Kolin Broderick each found the back of the net for the Otters, who advanced to the semifinals of the River Valley Athletic League with a 7-0 win on Monday.
