The Smith Vocational boys soccer team held a 1-0 lead over Franklin Tech at the half on Friday in Turners. 

The second half turned into the Josh Cole show. 

Cole scored a trio of goals in the final 40 minutes of play for the Vikings to record a hat trick and defeat the Eagles, 4-0, in a Tri-County League contest. 

Jared Small scored off an assist from Jon Peters to give the Vikings their 1-0 lead at the half. Cole then scored two unassisted goals in the second half while adding a third goal that was assisted by Jacob Maloney. 

Pioneer 4, Mount Everett 0 — Kurt Redeker had a hand in three of Pioneer’s four goals, as the Panthers handled the trip to Sheffield with aplomb on Friday.

Redeker tallied a goal and assisted on two others for the Panthers, while Mason Cummings, Alex McClelland and Gavin Gammell also scored in the win. Matan Lerman-Smith added an assist for Pioneer, which received five saves in net from Ty Ellis to record a clean sheet.

Easthampton at Frontier

Granby 1, Greenfield 0 — Liam Grahame-Lawson made eight saves in the Green Wave net, but the hosts were unable to find the back of the net in a 1-0 loss on Friday.

Granby’s Colin Murdock tallied the lone goal of the game six minutes into the second half when he converted a penalty kick.

Girls soccer

Mahar 0, St. Mary ’s 0 — Alivia Patch stopped all seven shots she faced for the Senators, and Avery Savage paced the   de fensive effort in a 0-0 draw with St. Mary’s on Friday.

“It was especially encourag ing  considering we are a  litt le banged up and we didn't use it as an excuse,” Mahar coach Chad Softic said of the tie.

Volleyball

Franklin Tech 3, Ware 0 — Haleigh Benoit put down seven kills to go with two aces and two digs, as the Eagles cruised to a 25-17, 25-20, 25-19 independent sweep on Friday.

Shelby O’Leary dished out 11 assists and notched five aces and two digs for Franklin Tech, which also received strong performances from Brooke Smith (two kills, one assist, one block) and Skylei LaPan (four aces).

South Hadley 3, Athol 2 — A 20-ace performance from the Bears helped them jump out to a 2-0 lead, but South Hadley rallied to win the final three frames and capture the independent win.

Athol won the first two sets 25-10 and 25-18 before the Tigers rallied with wins — 25-14, 25-12, 15-6.

Laney Florentino had six aces, four assists and two kills for the Bears. Anna Duquette put down three kills and four aces, while Giana Vaillancourt added five aces and three digs. Alma White tossed in two kills and four aces of her own.

Chicopee 3, Mohawk Trail 1 — Seven kills from Palmer King led the way for the Warriors, which dropped a 26-24, 20-25, 25-20, 25-23 decision to Chicopee in an independent contest on Friday.

Riley Giard and Emma Canaday each put down five kills for Mohawk Trail, while Canaday dished out seven assists and King had 12. Jadelyn Wheeler paced the defensive effort with six digs, and Adrian Grant added four.

Field hockey

Franklin Tech 2, Turners Falls 0 — Hannah Gilbert scored the game’s only two goals, and the Eagles did enough to get past their crosstown foe in an independent contest played Friday in Turners Falls.

Lilly Ross and Kate Trudeau assisted on Gilbert’s two goals, and goalie Madison Markwell made two saves.

Turners Falls goalie Conner Herzig stopped eight shots in net.

Frontier 7, Holyoke 0 — The Redhawks offense got to work on Friday, scoring three goals in the first half and four more in the second en route to a 7-0 independent victory.

Hailey Hutkoski scored two goals for Frontier and assisted on another, while Ashley Taylor, Stella Heflin, Claire Kirkendall, Maddison McKemmie and Rowan Reilly all added markers. Macy DeMaio had two assists for the Hawks, and Kyra Richards stopped four shots for the shutout in the Frontier cage.

Agawam 1, Greenfield 1 — Greenfield’s Riley Thayer put in the game-tying goal with 3:42 to go in the third quarter and neither defense allowed much from that point on, with Greenfield earning a Suburban League tie over the visiting Brownies on Friday. 

“We battled hard today,” Green Wave coach Erin Thayer said. “I saw a lot of good things. We were communicating well and showed a lot of good team work out there.” 

Agawam’s goal came with 13:08 to play in the second on a corner. Ainslee Flynn made five saves for Greenfield. 

Golf

Pioneer 173, Athol 234 — Brayden Thayer was the match medalist for the Panthers, firing a round of 39 to help the club earn a victory over the Bears on Friday.

Ben Werner was the team’s No. 2 scorer with a round of 43, followed by Ethan Mauthe (44) and Ryan Guertin (47).

Athol’s Ethan Heuer shot 52 to lead the way. Other scorers for the Bears were Dominik St. Andre (54), Brandon Adams (59) and Rafael Lopez (69).

Golf

Turners 177, Franklin Tech 178 — It came down to the wire between the Thunder and the Eagles at Thomas Memorial on Thursday, with Jack Day shooting a 39, Joey Mosca carding a 40 while Reese Ewell and Grady Deery each finished with a 49 for Turners to edge out Tech by one stroke. 

Gabe Mota (42), Braeden Talbot (44), Will Belval (45) and Brady Booska (47) scored for the Eagles.
