Bella Pettengill hit the shot of her life for the Mohawk Trail girls basketball team on Thursday against Smith Vocational. 

Trailing Smith Vocational 39-36 in the closing seconds Pettengill took a step back 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded and drained the shot, sending the game to overtime with the game knotted at 39. 

The Warrior defense proceeded to hold the Vikings scoreless in overtime while scoring six points themselves to earn a 45-39 victory. 

After going 1-20 a season ago Mohawk Trail has now opened its season with two straight wins. 

Pettengill led the way with 16 points, four coming in overtime. Valerie Bzomowski tossed in 13 points, Rachel Pease tallied 10 points, Natalie Lanoue scored four points while Riley Giard scored a basket in overtime for the Warriors.

Boys basketball

Greenfield 68, Drury 59 — The Green Wave were able to avenge their loss to the Blue Devils in the Western Mass. Class C championship game from last year, going to North Adams and walking away with a Hampshire League South victory in their season-opener on Thursday. 

Caleb Thomas scored a team-high 20 points, Jon Breor recorded a 14 points, 11 rebound double-double while Caleb Murray put in 14 points and added nine assists and eight steals in the win. 

Grayson Thomas (9), Jacob Blanchard (5), Ollie Postera (4) and David Jung-Hernandez (2) rounded out the Greenfield scorers. 

Athol 63, Turners 45 — Angel Castillo paced the Bears with 22 points, helping them come away with a Hampshire League North win over the Thunder in Athol’s season-opener on Thursday at Mallet Gymnasium. 

“I’m glad to be getting the season rolling and with a win,” Bear coach Brian Patria said. “They played with high energy and with discipline. We shot 56 percent from inside the arc and we created a lot of turnovers with our pressure defense. Angel Castillo played extremely well.” 

Aaron Ouellet tallied 10 points, Ben Kearney and Ray Castine each tossed in eight points while Ethan Bacigalupo added six points in the victory for Athol. 

Jackson Cogswell (12), Branden Truesdell (11), Joey Mosca (9) and Cam Burnett (6) led the way offensively for Turners. 

Mount Greylock 66, Franklin Tech 47 — The Mounties built a 38-25 lead at the half to pull away with a Hampshire League North victory over the Eagles in Turners on Thursday. 

Cam Candelaria tallied 12 points, Nolan Stafford finished with 11 points while Josiah Little and Gabe Mota each scored six points for Franklin Tech (0-3). 

Pioneer 68, Lenox 26 — It was a stellar defensive performance from the Panthers against the Millionaires on Thursday in Northfield. 

Pioneer pulled ahead 37-20 at the half and proceeded to hold Lenox to four points in the third quarter and two in the fourth quarter to cruise to a Hampshire League South victory. 

Brayden Thayer knocked down four 3’s to finish with 24 points in the win. Josh Wood tossed in 13 points, Kurt Redeker scord 12 points while snagging eight rebounds and dishing five assists, Alex McClelland recorded eight points and five steals while Gavin Gammell dished five assists for Pioneer (3-0). 

Hockey

Longmeadow 4, Greenfield 1 — The Lancers got out to a blistering start, scoring three goals in the opening 10 minutes to pull away with a victory over the Green Wave in West Springfield on Thursday. 

Greenfield (1-1) outshot Longmeadow 17-5 in the second and third period combined. Jake Jurek scored the lone Green Wave goal in the second period. 

Wrestling

Mahar 48, Southwick 21 — Elias Roberts (132), Colby Chaisson (144) and Tristen Gaj (158) all secured victories via pin to help the Senators walk away with a win over  the visiting Rams on Thursday.

Girls basketball

Reniassance 54, Franklin Tech 35 — The Eagles dropped their first game of the season on Wednesday night in Springfield.

Franklin Tech (3-1) trailed 15-5 after one quarter but still found itself in the game entering the fourth. Down 36-29 in the final quarter however, the Eagles were outscored 18-6 to put the game out of reach.

Kyra Goodell led the Eagles with nine points, while Hannah Gilbert followed with seven points and Lea Chapman added five points and 16 rebounds.
