GREENFIELD — People are planning to gather at the Town Common today for March for Our Lives, a nationwide demonstration advocating stricter gun laws and safety from gun violence.

The demonstration is set to run from noon to 3 p.m.

On the event’s Facebook page, 60 people indicated they were interested in going and 23 people indicated they were going as of 2 p.m. Friday.

“I created this event because I want to show my support for the kids and my kids with some action,” event organizer Alex DeMelo wrote on Facebook. DeMelo could not be reached for further comment.

Many other demonstrations across the country today are student-organized, following several recent school shootings including that in Parkland, Fla., where a gunman killed 14 students and three others at Stoneman Douglas High School.

“I hope you can come and bring something you would like to read, or perform, or anything peaceful you would like to do,” DeMelo says on Facebook.

Major March for Our Lives events are expected to take place in Washington, D.C., and state capitals, including Boston.

Other demonstrations in western Massachusetts are planned in Northampton, Amherst, Springfield, Petersham and Pittsfield, according to the March For Our Lives website.
