GREENFIELD — The Greenfield Kiwanis Club’s main focus is children, says board of directors member Anne Corrinet. That same focus is true this time of year, when the club provides gifts for about 30 children in need.

The distribution of presents comes Tuesday evening as part of a free community dinner at the Salvation Army on Chapman Street. The Salvation Army chooses the families who participate, with around 50 or 60 meals expected to be served this year. The Kiwanis Club serves as an event sponsor.

“It’s just so well received and really appreciated by families,” Corrinet said. “We sing Christmas carols. We make it festive.”

To raise money to sponsor the meal and buy gifts for the children, the Kiwanis Club holds fundraisers throughout the year, primarily a golf tournament in lieu of its once-traditional auction. The meal and present distribution have been held for more than 20 years.

“The kids really enjoy it,” she said. “It’s something special for them.”

As a health safety precaution, each family will be seated at their own table, Corrinet said. Masks are required, but can be removed to eat.
