SOUTH DEERFIELD — Frontier Regional School and Union 38 Superintendent Lynn Carey has announced she is resigning after two years on the job.

“I have made the decision to relocate back to my home,” Carey, who’s from Chicopee, said in an email Thursday. “Due to the many evening requirements of the job, I have not been able to (be) at home with my husband during the week. We decided that our quality of life was not what we wanted.”

On Monday, the Frontier and Union 38 school committees will hold a special meeting, in part, to discuss the hiring of a new superintendent. Union 38 oversees the independent town elementary schools in Conway, Deerfield, Sunderland and Whately while the Frontier regional committee oversees grades 7 through 12 education for the four towns.

A resignation letter from Carey sent to School Committee Chairman Bob Halla on May 1 stated she will step away from the position as of June 30.

“I am grateful to the Frontier Regional and Union 38 school committees for their support during my service as well as to the citizens of the four towns for welcoming into their communities,” Carey said in the email.

A subcommittee has been formed to conduct the search for the next superintendent. Halla, though, was not available for comment before press time for this story.

Carey began as superintendent in July 2016, replacing Martha Barrett.

When hired in February 2016, she said her first focus would be on what materials and resources are needed to keep the district’s buildings running and its employees effective. She hoped to remain “fiscally sound and fiscally fair,” while running the schools.

Before coming to Deerfield, Carey was the director of curriculum, instruction and assessment for the Monadnock Regional School District in Swanzey, N.H.
