SOUTH DEERFIELD — No injuries were reported but a house on Graves Street remains uninhabitable until further inspections are completed following an early-morning electrical fire on Thursday.

The South Deerfield Fire District was called to 10 Graves St. at approximately 3:30 a.m for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered heavy smoke and fire in the attic, but were able to contain the blaze to the attic, according to Fire Chief William Swasey.

“It was a great knockdown,” Swasey said by phone. “It’s uninhabitable currently. They’re working with the Deerfield building official and electrical inspector.”

While the attic suffered “heavy damage,” Swasey said the first and second floors only experienced minor water damage.

Swasey said the fire most likely started as a result of electrical wiring, and he emphasized the importance of managing wires and electronics to prevent fires.

“The one key is electrical safety,” he said. “Don’t overload outlets is what I’d stress. … Minimize use of power strips.”

Swasey thanked neighboring departments that responded with mutual aid, which included the Deerfield Fire District, Whately, Sunderland, Bernardston and Greenfield fire departments, along with Deerfield Police, South County EMS and the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services Hazmat Team, according to the South Deerfield Fire District’s Facebook page.
