ERVING — Police Chief Christopher Blair is on an indefinite leave, and the Selectboard expects to hire a replacement.

The Selectboard did not give the reason for Blair’s leave of absence in the meeting Tuesday when the department’s restructuring was decided. However, the board noted specifically that it was not related to any disciplinary matter.

In the interim, Sgt. Robert Holst is the acting police chief.

Most of the discussion was in closed session. Selectboard Chair Jacob Smith cited law allowing executive session for discussing the reputation, character, physical or mental health of an employee, rather than professional competence.

A timeline for hiring a new chief is not clear yet, Smith said. The board may hire a professional hiring agency to assist with the process, he said.

The Selectboard may discuss the issue in more detail this coming Monday, but not necessarily, Smith said. Acting Chief Holst will likely meet with the board at that time too.
