GREENFIELD — A detainee who tested positive for COVID-19 and another who rode with him in a Franklin County Sheriff’s Department transport van were released on personal recognizance following a virtual bail hearing earlier in the week.

Juan Calderon-Gomez, 20, of Springfield, was arrested Saturday on a warrant out of Hampden County and detained at the Franklin County Jail and House of Correction until Greenfield District Court opened Tuesday, according to Sheriff Christopher Donelan.

The court was closed Monday due to Columbus Day. Donelan explained new arrestees are tested for COVID-19 and quarantined after they are processed. He said Calderon-Gomez and three other detainees were en route to the Franklin County Justice Center when the jail received lab results indicating Calderon-Gomez had tested positive for the virus.

The sheriff said the four then arrived at the court and were immediately returned to the jail. Bail hearings were held virtually. The judge was Mark Pasquariello.

Donelan said one other detainee was released. The other two are quarantined at the jail. Donelan explained Calderon-Gomez is scheduled to be arraigned in Springfield District Court on Oct. 30.

Erika Gully-Santiago, a spokesperson for the state Executive Office of the Trial Court, said trial court officers did not have close contact with the detainees. She also said the holding cell was cleaned overnight and returned to use Wednesday.

According to its website, the Executive Office of the Trial Court “includes staff to support judicial policy, judicial education, general counsel, research and planning, intergovernmental relations, specialty court administration, grants management, general administration and communications.”

Donelan stressed the jail’s only positive COVID-19 cases have involved new arrestees and there have not been any cases inside the facility.

About six months ago, an unidentified officer who was assigned to the jail’s transportation unit and had limited activity in the facility tested positive while using vacation days. He rested at home until he recovered and displayed no symptoms.
