DEERFIELD — A two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Route 116 and Industrial Drive on Monday morning resulted in the death of 97-year-old Easthampton man and the closure of a section of Route 116 for at least 4½ hours, according to the Northwestern district attorney’s office.
The vehicles — one a passenger car and the other a commercial vehicle — each had two occupants. First responders determined the 97-year-old man was dead at the scene. A passenger in the car was transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield for what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries. The truck’s driver and passenger, who remained at the scene and were cooperative with investigators, were evaluated by medical personnel but required no further treatment, according to the DA’s office.
Workers with the state Department of Transportation blocked off the road at its intersection with Sugarloaf Street on the Sunderland side and at Long Plain Road so emergency personnel could work at the scene. The crash occurred around 10:30 a.m. and the road was reopened by around 2:30 p.m.
Deerfield and Whately police as well as State Police Troopers with the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS) and the Detective Unit assigned to the DA’s office responded to the scene. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
