Bulletin Board: Riley Giard throws no-hitter to lead Mohawk Trail softball past Putnam

Riley Giard looked like she was in midseason form in the circle for the Mohawk Trail softball team on Thursday in its opener against Putnam. 

Giard tossed a no-hitter, striking out nine along the way as the Warriors cruised to a 23-1 victory over the host Beavers in Springfield.

Sophia Goodnow knocked a double while Addie Loomis singled in the win for Mohawk Trail. 

Boys volleyball

Chicopee Comp 3, Athol 0 — The Bears finished the match with eight kills and four aces but it wasn’t enough to get the job done against the Colts, which came away with a 25-18, 25-9, 25-13 over Athol in both squads’ first match of the season on Thursday in Chicopee. 

Ashan Santiago and Colin Mason both had a pair of kills for the Bears, with Santiago adding two aces. Logan McGrath tallied two aces, Holden Girouard dished six assists while Caleb Leblanc came up with four digs in the loss. 

In JV action Caunor Mason put down four aces as the Bears fell to Chicopee Comp, 2-1. 

Hoop shoot

Four locals will be heading to Arch Bishop High School in Braintree on Saturday for the Knights of Columbus State Hoop Shoot after qualifying last Saturday at the Western Mass. Hoop Shoot Championship at Greenfield High School. 

Ever Kennedy won the 13-year-old girls group while Tayler Bergeron took the 14-year-old girls group. On the boys side Conner Bergeron won the 12-year-old section while Taygen Daignault came in first in the 13-year-old group, with the victories earning all four a spot in the state tournament.
