Athol JV softball walks off with win over rivals

Abigail Kirwan’s fourth double of the game gave the Athol High School junior varsity softball team a 16-15 walkoff win over Mahar at home on Wednesday. 

Emma Bacigalupo played well defensively behind the plate and added two doubles and a single. Maddy Kennif tripled with a single for the Red Raiders.

Kennedy Vaillancourt had three strikeouts for Athol and added three singles at the plate. Kassidy Swan patrolled the outfield with four catches in left field.  

Haylee Allen, Lacee Boutell and Anya Roberts all had two hits for the Senators.  

Julianna Lamontagne threw out four runners and made two putouts at third base. Makayla Mathurin struck out three in the circle. 

Youth softball


Kalyn Barry scored the game-winning run to help the Northfield Cougars to an 8-7 walkoff win over Vernon, Vt., in a Tri-County League youth softball game Thursday at Northfield Elementary School.

Elana Witherell clubbed a two-run home run in the win and added two more singles. She also struck out eight in three innings in the circle. Kristine Given had three hits at the plate and struck out four in three innings in the circle. Laura Fuess and Kyra Goodwin each had two hits for Northfield, while Tia Strysky and Annabelle Heydenreich each added one hit.

Katelyn Slade struck out 11 in six innings in the loss and also had two hits. Brielle Mulverhill led Vernon with four hits.


Savannah Aldrich struck out seven in three innings to help Conte Office Interiors to a 15-11 win over Freedom Credit Union in a Greenfield Girls Softball League game Thursday at Murphy Park in Greenfield.

Shea Olan had a hit an an RBI for Conte, while Ivy Rae and Nora Drowski each added one hit.

Skylei Lapan had two hits for Freedom Credit. Emma Nash doubled, and Cayleigh Aldrich had a hit.

• In Lil’ Nipper Division action, Liliana Laprade went 2-for-2 to lead Pelletier Electric to a 5-0 win over Harper’s Store.

Angelina Kampuries went 3-for-3 in the loss, and Lexi Hawkins went 2-for-3.


Tigers at Tri-States

Five gymnasts from the Greenfield YMCA Tumbling Tigers took home championship titles at the Tri-State YMCA Gymnastics Championships at the North Shore YMCA in Beverly.

A total of 540 gymnasts from 16 teams were represented at the tournament, with teams coming from Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. The Greenfield YMCA Tumbling Tigers Gymnastics Team sent 30 gymnasts.

Virginia Krezmien won the vault (9.050), beam (9.375), floor (9.150) and all-around (36.375) at the 9-Year-Old Division in Level 2.

Zenani Himlin-Mayesko was the floor champion in Level 8 with a score of 9.175, Shelby Senn won the beam (9.0) at the Xcel Bronze level, Mila Frantz won vault (9.025) at the 12-Year-Old Xcel Gold level and Emily Braverman won vault with a score of 8.7 in the Xcel Diamond level.

The Greenfield Level 2 team placed second with a score of 108.875. In the 7 and Under Division, Angelina Ayrapetyun placed second in vault with a score of 9.1 and tied for third in floor with a score of 8.55. In the Age 8 Division, Theresa Hamel tied for third on vault (8.9).

In the Age 9 Division, Lennon Phillips placed second on the beam (9.325). In the Age 10 Division, Emilia Luetjen tied with Maya Colbeck for second on the vault (9.0) and took second in all-around (36.2). Luetjen placed third on bars (9.025) and tied with Anya Read for third on floor (9.1). Anna Carlson-Belanger placed third in vault (8.950).

In Level 3, Ava Garappolo took third on beam in the Age 11 Division with a score of 9.150. Paloma Cruz took third in all-around (36.250) and beam (9.150) in the 12 and Up Division.

In Level 6, Lanie Bowse tied for third on floor (9.225) in the 14 and Up Division. In Level 8, Himlin-Mayesko tied for third on beam (9.050).

The Greenfield Xcel Bronze team placed second with a score of 69.30. To go along with her win on beam, Senn also took second in vault (9.075) and all-around (35.025). Sandra Johnson took second on floor (8.725), third on vault (8.950) and tied for third on beam (8.650).

In Xcel Gold, Frantz took third on floor (9.125) in the Age 12 Division to pair with her win in vault. Elsie Baker tied for third on beam (9.050) in the Age 13 Division.

Kendall Fox placed second on beam (8.225) and all-around (33.325) and tied for second on floor (8.950) in Xcel Diamond.

Youth baseball

Cal Ripken

Michael Hioe struck out eight in three innings pitched and did not allow a run to lead Polish American Citizens Club to a 6-2 win over Wilcox Builders in a Frontier Cal Ripken baseball game in Hatfield.

Drew Bennett singled and scored twice in the win.

Nick Smiarowski struck out six in three innings for Wilcox.
