Local hunters had a strong day on Day 3 of the Massachusetts shotgun deer hunting season Wednesday with the five area stations reporting 68 checks.

Grrr Gear in Orange led the way with 18 checks on Day 3 and also reported nine checks from late in the day on Tuesday, bringing the Day 2 total to an impressive 70 deer. Area hunters have now reported 229 checks over the first three days of the season, which is 20 more than the first three days last season, and may be the largest number through three days in the past decade, which is a good sign for local hunters.

The size of deer checked on Wednesday was also impressive, as 21 of the 68 deer on the day weighed in at over 140 pounds, and of those, eight weighed in over 160 pounds. The largest deer of the day were taken by Allen Frost of Orange, and Donald Graves of New Berlin, N.Y. Graves checked two deer into Gould’s Sugarhouse in Shelburne, the largest of which weighed in at 222 pounds, however the deer was not yet gutted, which typically lowers the weight by 20 to 25 percent. Nearly all hunters gut the deer before exiting the woods. Gutted, Graves’ deer would likely have checked in between 170 and 180 pounds. Frost, meanwhile, had a 183-pound, 8-point buck that he checked into Grrr Gear, one of 18 deer checked into the business, which led the way for area posts. Bitzer Hatchery in Montague was busy with 17 checks on Wednesday, Gould’s had 16, and Sunderland Hatchery finished with 13. Overwatch Outpost in Charlemont checked in with four deer.

The buck with the most points of the day belonged to Dan Aukstikalnis of Zellwood, Fla., who checked in a 169-pound buck with an incredible 14-point rack. James Amadon of Waltham checked a 173-pound, 9-point deer in as well. Kevin White of Athol also checked a 175-pound, eight-point buck in late Tuesday.

Michael Sibley of Northfield checked in a 177-pound, eight-point buck at Bitzer, which was the same place that Benjamin Otto of Greenfield checked in his 175-pound, eight-pointer.

Daniel Crowell of Colrain checked a 173-pound, 10-point buck at Gould’s to round out the deer over 170 pounds.
