Bulletin Board: UNH icemen dump UMass, 3-1

The University of New Hampshire scored twice in the first period and went on to knock off the University of Massachusetts, 3-1, in a Hockey East game Saturday in Durham, N.H.

The loss dropped UMass to 11-16-1 overall, while UNH improved to 10-13-5.

Liam Blackburn and Kohei Sato scored for the Wildcats in the first period. UMass cut the deficit in half midway through the second when Cale Makar and Oliver Chau set up Mitchell Chaffee for his team-leading 11th goal of the season.

UNH regained the two-goal cushion when Marcus Vela scored on a rebound with nine minutes to play in the game as part of a five-minute power play.

UMass outshot UNH, 27-17, on the game but Danny Tirone stopped 26 shots in the win. Ryan Wischow made 14 saves for the Minutemen.

UMass hosts Merrimack Tuesday night at 7.

Mite results

Mylena Prunier scored five times Sunday to lead Franklin County Hockey Association Platinum to a 9-7 win over Northern Berkshire in a Greater Springfield League Mite Division game at Vietnam Veterans Arena in North Adams.

Grace Laurie had two goals and three assists in the win, Vinny Grima scored twice, and Patrick McCarthy had an assist. Ryan Capen made 18 saves.

• On Saturday, Grima and Charley Knight each scored but FCHA suffered a 12-2 loss to Wilbraham Twin Meadows.

Colin Galli stopped 28 shots in the loss.

• Also Saturday, the FCHA Mite Green team defeated Pioneer Valley, 13-8.

Chase Zraunig scored five times to pace the victory, and Carter Schloat had one goal and two assists. Stefan Flaska had a goal and an assist, and Nico Siano scored once. Asa Bouchard and Desmond Drake each had an assist, and Jay McGinnis made 10 saves.

Newt Guiltbault signups

Signups for the Newt Guilbault Community Baseball League in Turners Falls will be held Wednesday and Feb. 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. Kazimierz Society, as well as the Montague Police Department Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon.

Players must be 9 years old before May 1, and cannot turn 13 before May 1. For the travel team, players must be 7 years old before Aug. 1. New players to the league must bring their birth certificate.

Tryouts for the league are March 3 from 9-11 a.m. at Turners Falls High School. That day is also the last chance to sign up, from 8-9 a.m. The cost is $75 for the first child in a family, $50 for the second. A hat, shirt, pants and belt are included.
